GDPR – a rude awakening

While there was much fanfare before the introduction of the GDPR regulation, beyond being spammed by GDPR notice emails since it became effective in May 2018, the impact has been largely muted in the eyes of the general public.

We think this will change with the £183m fine the UK’s ICO has handed to British Airways for the breach last summer. This dwarfs the £500k fine (calculated under the old data protection act of 1998) handed to Facebook for its Cambridge Analytica scandal that affected some 87m customers. BA’s data breach, despite the sizable fine, only affected 0.5m customers. Earlier in the year France’s CNIL fined Google €50m using the GDPR framework for its privacy lapses. GDPR, it seems, has started to bite hard.
