More than just fun and games

As the $138bn Gaming industry experiences continued growth fuelled by mobile/console/PC, we highlight the 5 key themes that we think will shape the industry over the next decade.

1. Increased mobile penetration and the rise of independent studios
2. Cross-platform play
3. The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) in gaming
4. Augmented reality (AR)
5. Opening up the eSports market

The gaming industry has grown to support specialism and thus new business models. From specialist indie studios to technical services providers, we are beginning to see a transition towards the new world of gaming, where there is an increasing need for specialists to manage the explosion in new, rich and complex content.

Global publishers such as EA, Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft are finding long-term value with specialist providers, and we are seeing adoption of strategic partnerships (eg Sperasoft, a Keywords company, co-developing Assassin’s Creed, a Ubisoft title) leading to higher-quality titles and a migration away from the old world of fully self-developed games.

The trend towards digital consumption is also a major factor in the gaming space, as traditional brick-and-mortar business models experience pressure from sales through online platforms such as Steam, giving physical stores (Game, GameStop) a lower share of revenue, leaving more for the publisher.
